A Long History

2008.04.09
Sprouts were believed to have been cultivated in Italy in Roman times, and possibly as early as the 1200s in Belgium. The modern Brussels sprout that we are familiar with was first cultivated in large quantities in Belgium (hence the name "Brussels" sprouts) as early as 1587, with their introduction into the U.S. in the 1800s.

They have the capacity to look like something other than a Brussels sprout— "Do fish ever get seasick."
—James Joyce

When upright I see a tree—"The tree is more than first a seed, then a stem, then a living trunk, and then dead timber. The tree is a slow, enduring force straining to win the sky. —Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

They often aren't invited to social gatherings.—“Reputation is an idle and most false imposition; oft got without merit, and lost without deserving.”— William Shakespeare

From the Telegraph—Britain

Man Misses World Record by Just Seven Sprouts

An office worker with a taste for Brussel sprouts has narrowly missed eating his way into the record books.

Despite scoffing an amazing 37 sprouts in one minute, Richard Townsend fell just seven short of the current world record.

Mr Townsend, 24, from Exeter, Devon, had trained for six weeks for his attempt at entering the Guinness Book of Records, eating a plate of sprouts every day.

During the attempt, his instrument of choice was a wooden toothpick, which he used expertly to cram the vegetables into his mouth.

"I just lost it. A couple slid off the plate and there was not enough frequency ... I do not think I could face another sprout for a few days," he said.

But then he popped one of the remaining vegetables into his mouth, saying, "It's a shame to waste them".

The current record of eating 43 sprouts in a minute was set by Dave Mynard in London in December 2003.

turndaround Great post. It's been a while since I've learned anything new about brussel sprouts, I have to admit. The pics, the commentary, and the quotes are great.

jagungal Sprouts? ...well... but lovely photos: you can see the life and vitality bursting out...and hey, you've quoted one of the finest (and most neglected) writers of the century, the incomparable Antoine de Saint Exupery ("Wind, Sand and Stars" is one of the great documents of the modern era...but you don't need a literary lecture I'm sure) Well done on another quirky post!

oldbabe We just love brussel sprouts! The granddaughters call them "little cabbages". They call broccoli "little trees" ! I don't think I want to try to set the world's record for eating them, though!

Oh, BTW, roasting brussel sprouts (with other veggies and a little sea salt) really brings out the sweetness of these cute little things.
