Roget's Thesaurus

2008.04.18
When I read about this book by Joshua Kendall, I knew that it was a must read.

From the inside cover, "Peter Mark Roget—polymath, eccentric, synonym afficionado—was a complicated man. ...But most notably, he made lists."

Each word, with its shades and nuances, delights the logophile.

"The words! I collected them is all shapes and sizes and hung them like bangles in my mind."
—Hotense Calisher

So many choices to gratify or quench a love of words.

"For those of us who write, it is necessary to scrutinize not only the truth of what we speak, but the truth of that language by which we speak."

—Audre Lorde

I'm fascinated, captivated, bewitched, enamored with Roget's Thesaurus. Where else can you find milium or comedo, or nevus, or verruca as synonyms for blemish?

This has been a busy week, even a hectic week, so when the library left me an email saying The Man Who Made Lists by Joshua Kendall was in and I could pick it up—I was euphoric, maybe even eupeptic.

"There’s a frisson you get when you meet a word for the first time—feeling pleasantly stumped in between wondering, What the heck does that mean? and hurrying off to find out."
—Martha Barnette & Grant Barrett

aknor Cool set...I am a word lover but my problem is retention. I love reading words, looking them up, dissecting them...and when I really want to use them - they fail me - or maybe I fail them. Love this post - Thanks!

CJLata It wasn't by happenstance,
I came about an accident,
the details are unessential,
they are contingent on an appendage,
which was merely incidental,
they held no collateral,
because of their impersonality,
as well as their nonsubjectivity,
you see they were full of supplements,
which lacked a discreteness,
we didn't at all like their foreignness,
so we discarded them as appurtenance!

CJLata ;o)

oldbabe Before today if someone told me I had a few comedos I would not have know whether to thank them or stick my tongue out at them. (And the etymology of that word is disgusting!)

But communication is about getting a point across, is it not? So shouldn't the audience to whom we want to articulate be considered before we consult a thesaurus for the strange and unusual?

Several years ago for Christmas my brother sent me a desk calendar that listed each day rather unusual words and their definitions. I rather enjoyed that. Can't remember a single word that was on it now!

oldbabe ...and it should be above...."would not have KNOWN"!

photopoet To CJLatta

Hail to the wordsmiths
who revel in arcane, abstruse, and crabbed words
who nose out, without trepidation,
words wallowing in a state of obsolescence
and rather than jettison them to the dustheap or midden
insert them in mannerly conversation
Hail the wordhoard, the calque,
an occasional sesquipedalian word,
Hail those who study the science of lexicology,
etymology, semantic history, onomatology
Three cheers for the neologist
Cheers to 582.7-20

(Loved your piece)

jagungal I am a list and word junkie — you can imagine the thrilling shiver that rippled up my spine as soon as I saw the title — and the promise of what lay within was not betrayed. Wonderful images, wonderful words — wonderful beyond any singing of them. A heartfelt Thank you.

Peche Oh, my passions... words and photography combined...
I LOVE my thesaurus and dictionary... and these shots are marvellous...
As my uncle once said (as Stephen Wright famously did) one night a few years back when I was reading through my thesaurus looking for a word to rebuke him with...

"What's another word for Thesaurus?"

:)
