A Long History

2008.04.21
"The earliest popcorn ever found is believed to be 4,000 years old. They were found in the Bat Cave of New Mexico, USA —1948-50. "

"Charles Cretors, founder of C. Cretors and Company in Chicago, introduced the world's first mobile popcorn machine at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. Scientific American reported: "This machine...was designed with the idea of moving it about to any location where the operator would be likely to do a good businesss. The apparatus, which is light and strong, and weighing but 400 or 500 pounds, can be drawn readily by a boy or by a small pony to any picnic ground, fair, political rally, etc. and to many other places where a good business could be done for a day or two."

"When moving pictures became the rage and movie houses opened across the country, the street vendors of popcorn would rent space outside the theaters and sell bags of popcorn to movie ticket buyers."

A local organic food store hosted a tasting last Saturday. I ended up being a great taster—tried everything and bought several items.

We bought three ears of corn on the cob popcorn. Because I thought the almost popped cob made for a good photo shoot I took it out before the popping finished. (We still had a huge bowl of delectable popped corn).

oldbabe Thanks for the history. That popcorn makes for great pictures. It looks yummy too.

We grew popcorn one year and tried this with the kids when they were little. It beats shelling it all before popping.
