Thuya Garden

2008.07.14

If I wanted to live in my own created world I'd lay claim to these flowers, but I've never grown anything too demanding. Hostas thrive and ground covers multiply on my small plot of land.

Thuya Garden is part semi-formal English garden surrounded by woodlands and situated on a granite hillside. Charles Savage created the garden in 1956 on land that once was an orchard. He designed the garden to be a "semiformal herbaceous garden in the style of England's famous designer and author, Gertrude Jekyll.."

The land was originally owned by Joseph Henry Curtis—a Boston landscape architect. He designed a "Terrace Trail to traverse up the hillside." A summer cottage at the top was called Thuya Lodge—so named for the northern white cedar in the area. Thuya occientalis.
