To Keep In or to Keep Out

2008.08.03
“The fence around a cemetery is foolish, for those inside can't get out and those outside don't want to get in.”

Arthur Brisbane

If someone wants a sheep, then that means that he exists.
—Antoine de Saint-Exupery, The Little Prince

“Don't ever take a fence down until you know why it was put up.”

—Robert Frost

on the other side

“Stone walls do not a prison make, nor iron bars a cage.”
—Richard Lovelace

“I want you to be concerned about your next door neighbor. Do you know your next door neighbor?”

—Mother Teresa of Calcutta

“The wide world is all about you; you can fence yourselves in, but you cannot forever fence it out.”

J.R.R. Tolkien

Everything pictured here is within ten minutes of my house.

The cemetery is a five minute walk—just past the apple orchard where the Gravenstein apples will be ready in several weeks. A mile down the road is a sheep farm where you can find Cotswold sheep wool, yarn, and blankets or a 1/2 or whole lamb carcass.

Buried in the cemetery are some who died in King Philip's War. "This cruel war... was attended by inexpressible calamities, each party making every possible effort for the total overthrow of its antagonist."
—James Thacher, 1832
"The war was devastating for Native Peoples. Entire families were sold into slavery abroad; others were forced to become servants locally. The Wampanoag had to adapt aspects of their culture to survive; their political independence ended."

Drive five minutes and a construction site—a square building is replacing several wood structures that were in dire need of repair.

Less than ten minutes away is a correctional facility. The prison houses over 1,400 medium, maximum, and protective custody inmates

leocheung Beautiful pictures of a great theme.

“The fence around a cemetery is foolish, for those inside would get out if they would and those outside will get in when the time comes.”

jagungal nice mix of reportage and visual poetry PP—especially like the first two, and AdSX's quote is priceless; it has a certain Gallic wit—lovely!

carmitage I suppose our world is made of fences, physical and mental, put up to control and/or protect. Imagine a world without fences, walls or barriers and a mind without constraint...
Great thoughts and clever pictures to go within

oldbabe An old cemetery...looks well kept. Disrespectful kids sometimes like to get in and destroy stones or write graffiti on them. How sad they have not been taught to respect ancestors, whether theirs or others'.

I'll pass on the sheep dip, although I think I will still exist.

Is that a mirror on the other side of no trespassing sign? That's really an interesting photo.

My next door neighbors are very far away in this rural district, but I know them...mostly farmers and teachers. Good people. Simple people. People who have ancestors who homesteaded the same land that is in the family to this day. (I must be stuck on ancestors today).

Nice photos to pick some brain. I don't want in or out of any of them ;-)

ScubaLiz Nice shots! Quite a varied set of neighbors you have! ;)

And a great idea to take photos of things close to home, it's always nice to get a peek at someone else's corner of the world!

mpaytubi Sobre #1. Evidentment ningú surt del recinte final per pròpia decisió.
Molt encertat el comentari.

About #1. Obviously nobody goes out from the final precinct out of own decision. Very right the comment.
