"In Southwest Harbor, in front of the library, you'll find Roy Patterson's Sisters. The two women are carved out of Jonesboro granite. They weigh in at over a ton and measuring six feet tall."

Sullivan's Tower
"Just across the Taunton River in Sullivan, on a grassy patch, youy'll see German sculptor Jo Kley's obelisk . His tower of Jonesboro and Sullivan granite appears to be a stack of small condos with an eccentric granite ball balanced on top. It has a precarious lean to it."

"Inside Acadia National Park, you'll find Ian Newbery's Tribute to Life very near where it was created last summer. While the Swedish sculptir was laboring over the giant chunks of Steuben basalt and Jonesboro and Sullivan granite last summer, they were placed horizontally so that he could polish, grind and shape them. The pieces looked a bit like giant corkscrews made of rock. In the finished work they became more elegant, now resembling the antlers of a magic stone gazelle."

Glimpse of the Moon
"John Salisbury's sculpture stands on the lawn next to the Henry Moore Parish House in his hometown of Steuben. It looks like a giant seed tucked between two tree trunks, with the cool, green grass at its base, as though the rock were a living plant. The hard surface of the granite appears to be softened by the sculptor's hand, revealing a complexity of subtle color and texture."

Transitory by Polish sculptor Dominiika Griesgraber
"Two columns of Jonesboro granite and Addison gabbro rise high into th air, grabbing upward for the sky. They simultaneously bend toward each other and away, with Gaudiesque off-square and undulating lines. This couple is one of contrasts between rough and smooth, square and obtuse, light and dark. ...They seem permanent rock-solid, a reminder that we, the viewers are the one in transit."

Cleat by Don Meserve
"Where the road dead ends in Winter Harbor, look straight ahead. Here is another sculpture. Yes, in the water. It's carved out of Jonesboro granite to look like, well, a giant boat cleat. Meserve, who is from Poland, Maine, told everyone he'd be happy some day to come by and see a boat tied up to his artwork.
Cleat is an unusual synergy of art, landscape, and function. Because its made of granite it looks at home in the water. the artist understood that the tide would make the sculpture its own over time adding to its patina and gently carving its own marks in the piece. Mesrve's love of the water and respect for its power makes this piece of art one that will keep getting better over time and he takes the risk that nature could eventually reclaim his work."

[i]I Want to Ride the Cloud[/i ]by Japanese sculptor Narihiro Uemura's. "This is a whimsical piece with the tiny figure of a man in a deeply carved niche and a see through moon. You can look through the moon to the other side of the sculpture. There is something about this piece that invites intimacy."

We spent an overcast day following the sculpture trail.
"Seven sculptors came to the Schoodic section of Acadia National Park last summer from all over the world for the first Schoodic International Sculpture Symposium, the inspiration of local sculptor Jesse Salisbury. Salisbury, well aware of Maine's history in the granite industry, wanted to invite sculptors to come and make art out of local rock. With colors that range from soft pinks for granite to deep black for basalt. "
"The sculptors who joined the symposium used locally quarried granite and basalt to create seven sculptors that were installed permanently...on the Downeast Landscape."
