Peregrinations Over a Weekend

2009.03.15
We drove into Cambridge—drove around looking for a "free" parking spot .

“I don't believe in angels, no. . . . But I do have a wee parking angel. It's on my dashboard and you wind it up. The wings flap and it's supposed to give you a parking space. It's worked so far.”

Billy Connolly

We headed to the Charles River and a walk to Boston.
There's no telling what you'll find—abandoned.

“Art is never finished, only abandoned.”

Leonardo da Vinci

No matter how hard I try I can't decipher the message.

“Words mean more than what is set down on paper. It takes the human voice to infuse them with shades of deeper meaning.”

Maya Angelou

I followed the arrow —for two blocks.

“Don't walk in front of me; I may not follow. Don't walk behind me; I may not lead. Just walk beside me and be my friend.”

Albert Camus

Don't you wonder what's behind this boarded up space?

“I can look at the knot in a piece of wood until it frightens me.”

—William Blake

Looking at a reflection through a broken glass—

“The beginning of love is to let those we love be perfectly themselves, and not to twist them to fit our own image. Otherwise we love only the reflection of ourselves we find in them.”

—Thomas Merton

Walking with the river on my right—passed joggers, sculls, cyclists, skaters, bench sitters, a homeless woman enjoying the same sun, and ducks.

Everywhere is walking distance if you have the time.
~Steven Wright

Bridges across the Charles—

“We build too many walls and not enough bridges.”

Isaac Newton

They seem so compatible.

“Diversity is the one true thing we all have in common. Celebrate it every day.”

All decked out for spring—

It's spring fever. That is what the name of it is. And when you've got it, you want - oh, you don't quite know what it is you do want, but it just fairly makes your heart ache, you want it so!

~Mark Twain

Arrived !

In a land of immigrants, one was not an alien but simply the latest arrival.
—Rudolf Arnheim

Back in Cambridge. I doubt that she is hunting for game.

Pa did not like a country so old and worn out that the hunting was poor. He wanted to go west. For two years he had wanted to go west and take a homestead, but Ma did not want to leave the settled country.
—Laura I. Wilder

Cities are repositories of abstractions and contradictions.

"All that a city will ever allow you is an angle on it — an oblique, indirect sample of what it contains, or what passes through it; a point of view."
-- Peter Conrad
