I don't know the answer to your questions, but I think the flower pics are beautiful!

1 looks like Saturn rings. Don't know about gimp. The second flower might be tulip. The tree is a softwood. Maybe a birch or poplar. I recognise the seed. We call them helicopters, but can't remember what tree it's from.

Hmm... tulip is right, I'll accept helicopters, even though I was trying to get polynose seed! =P

1. Lorentz attractor or strange attractor 2. Probably the arsenic used to cure it leaching out ;-) - dont touch it! 3. Powdery Puff weed ;-) It shoots powder at you (harmless though) 4. Crisanthemumunumy purpley plant thing 5/6. Orange poppy planty thingy 7/8. A rare Hens Teeth plant of the PullinYaLeg strain 8. A headless green dragon fly insect - trick question, but didnt fool me!

Ah, closest by far! Mold is close, Mildue was the answer. I'll take that, though. Tulip is correct (cheater! =P), rhubarb, not so much. "Whirly gig thing from a maple tree" is a polynose, AGAIN I'll give credit. 2 left for a winer!!!
