In Hinduism, Diwali marks the return of Lord Rama to his kingdom Ayodhya after defeating Ravana. He was welcomed by the people who lit candles and divas to celebrate his return. While Diwali is popularly known as the "festival of lights", the most significant spiritual meaning is "the awareness of the inner light".
Hence during Diwali people decorate their house with different kinds of lightings. And it lights the whole city with beautiful colors.
