SIS in the Summer - The Vegetable Garden
2008.07.16
Ideally situated with a glorious southern exposure, SIS's vegetable garden helps children understand environmental sustainability. Our custodians, Dave and Pat, constructed the beds and fencing. A pesky groundhog quickly taught us that plastic fencing needed to be reinforced with metal!

Maddy's circular herb garden is flourishing. The basil shoots up like fireworks, and many Italian meals have benefited from its flavor. As a fan of Mexican cuisine, I would like to be sure we also plant cilantro next year...

There is an abundance of zucchini flowers, and we are waiting for a good harvest. I personally like to slice them and grill them right on the barbecue with a little olive oil and Adobe seasoning.

I am often asked, "Do you work in the summer?" Yes, principals work in the summer, and it is bittersweet. The atmosphere is calmer and the workdays are shorter. The cost of such luxuries is the absence of color in the building. Not only is the physical color of artwork no longer hanging in the hallways, but the intangible palette provided by students and staff members is greatly missed.
The tones of summer, however, are in the outdoors. I am extremely fortunate to be witness to the abundance of beauty our school grounds contain. Today I would like to share with you what our brand new vegetable garden is looking like. It is the dream of our third grade aide, Mrs. Manzella, and was brought to life through the labors of staff members, students, and parent volunteers.

Thank you so much for the compliment. I don't want to exclude the great effort of so many parents in accomplishing the above. It was an inspiring team effort that realized this dream!
