SIS in the Summer - The Nature Trails

2008.07.17
The SIS Nature Trail was built as an Eagle Scout Project in the summer of 2007. It was officially opened on May 19, 2008 at a school wide outdoor ceremony that launched our inaugural Green Week activities. A student competition was held that officially named the trail network and its components. Above you can see "Kelso's Bridge" - the entry into our beautiful wooded sanctuary!

Here you can see why a bridge was necessary.

The yellow "Free Eagle Trail" is the main trail. It eventually leads to our Wooded Classroom.

The blue "Chirping Bluebird Trail" meanders off to the right just after the wooded classroom.

Ancient stone walls can be seen along the Chirping Bluebird trail.

Two roads diverged in a wood...

Off the red "Railway Trail" the wetlands that border our property can be seen!

Back on the Free Eagle Trail, heading back to the school, the wooded classroom is seen from the other direction.

While hiking the "Go Green Trails" it is very easy to forget where you are. This is the view of SIS as you come out of the woods.

Most of my career as a classroom teacher was spent in Southern Westchester. The vast majority of the school's outdoor space was covered with blacktop. How fortunate I feel to be the principal of a school that contains a wealth of natural resources - places where children can exercise both bodies and imaginations!

A purposeful visit to these woods can enrich every subject area in our school's curriculum. At times, however, the only purpose needed is to show students that there is an escape from the stressors of the technological world. New generations must realize nature's restorative powers and commit to being its steward...
