SIS in the Summer - The School Grounds

2008.07.18
An elevated courtyard adjacent to our third grade wing has seen some recent changes. Last year Mr. Badini's fourth grade class raised a flag pole to accompany the Peace Pole that was erected shortly after 9/11. For more information on Peace Poles

This past school year we also cleared enough space in the elevated courtyard for an outdoor classroom with flexible seating. So much thanks much be extended to our PTA, under the leadership of Mrs. Brady and Mrs. Acocella!

Our Colonial Herb Garden, also located in the elevated courtyard, will be a perfect companion to our fourth grade learning in Social Studies.

Another new addition to the elevated courtyard is a pumpkin patch. I love the summer, but this really has me looking forward to the autumn!

I have never seen pumpkins grow. Their flower are enormous. If you look carefully you'll see a bee doing its busy work in this flower.

On the perimeter of all our fields are bluebird houses. The bluebird sanctuary was installed by Mr. Badini's class in 2006.

This house, now vacated, was very active this past spring.

A small plot of land has been used throughout this decade by fourth grade teachers to enrich their learning about Native American culture. The plot is used to learn about the "Three Sisters". If you don't know about the Three Sisters, click here.

The newest addition to our outdoor spaces is the SIS Butterfly Garden. This garden was conceived, planned, and executed by student members of our Leadership Club. They spent much effort doing all the necessary fund raising and were able to complete the garden right at the end of the school year. I thank the Leadership Club members for this beautiful outdoor habitat.
