The August Garden: Trials and Jubilations

2008.08.14
A school garden should be a place for learning. Well, August has provided such opportunities. This picture represents that we continue to have much success. We are well on our way to having the produce needed for the First Annual SIS Soup Day, where the thousand mouths that make up our school community can sample our premiere harvest. Today's blog, however, documents the real world of working the earth... expect the unexpected!

We begin with an unsolved mystery, The Disappearing Cabbage. There were a half dozen heads that were fast approaching maturity. Then, early last week, they vanished into thin air! Volunteer gardeners donned sleuth hats to no avail. We may never know the fate of the missing leafy vegetables...

That being said, many fine specimens remain in tact! Our cucumber crop is past prime (oh my goodness, you would not believe how many cucumbers there were!) and now the zucchini is really beginning to flourish.

While we are on the topic of squash, our pumpkin patch is experiencing a set back. Powdery Mildew attacked the leaves. As novice growers, we did not recognize early signs and the problem is quite pervasive! We have consulted our good friends at Stuart's Farm for advice and hope to control things to the best of our ability.

As you can see, even with the Powdery Mildew problem, we will have some fine pumpkins adorning our school this autumn!

Remember those proud stalks of corn from last month's entry? Well, I will say no more.

Here is the evidence that raw corn is good eating for some being that can be found on our grounds.

If our corn stealing friends took their fill of tomatoes, we would never even notice. We planted a lot of tomatoes - cherries, plums, beefsteaks... their beautiful red color is a feast for the eyes. And their taste? I can not resist popping a couple in my mouth before returning to work.

So we live and learn through success and failure. A school is a place where we all get an education - especially the educators!

John Griffiths Hi, Kelly. If you click back to the month of July there are three of my first posts.

Thanks for the suggestion on how to improve SIS! You are going to need lockers at the middle school because you will be traveling from classroom to classroom. Students having their own desk here at SIS replaces the need for a locker in many ways. What do you think?

Good luck in middle school... Always feel free to come by for a visit and say, "Hello!"

Julie Gherardi Hi Mr Griffiths!
Love your blog and the pictures of the vegetable garden! I happened to be looking out at the back fields one day this summer and did see a flock of turkeys - I wonder if they are your culprits!
It is true that the garden provides lots of nutrition to encourage fertile thinking. Can't wait to see the fall pumpkins!
Happy gardening to you and everyone at SIS!
Mrs. Gherardi
