SOUP DAY

2008.09.26
It is a goal of the Somers Schools to have students understand the concept of Sustainable Development. We need to "to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." (The Brundtland Commission) The idea behind "Soup Day" is to allow students to taste the produce harvested from our gardens. We hope it begins to also foster an awareness of the time, natural resources and human resources needed to produce food.

This courtyard was to be the scene of the student tasting. However, with gloomy weather forecast, a contingency plan was devised. Ultimately, the rain and chill provided the appropriate setting. It was a good day for soup!

The soup was made yesterday in the kitchens of volunteers and brought to school this morning. Here you see two of the four soups: vegetable soup and potato soup.

Tents were erected and propane stoves brought in. PTA volunteers were in charge of the heating process.

100% ORGANIC! (and low sodium as well)

I think the soup tasted just a little bit better because it was being ladled out by mothers like this!

Okay, this is Helen Brady. She is the mastermind behind this whole affair. She conceived the idea, froze the produce throughout the summer, compiled the recipes, gathered the troops, and organized every logistic. She is truly amazing!

Here is the inside staging area. PTA members in this area were ready to roll out the soup carts to the doors of classroom for personal delivery!

With thirty-seven classrooms, this was no small task!

10:30 a.m. - the first cart departs!

The aroma that wafted through the corridors was exhilarating!

The principal's perks... Here I am being afforded an advanced tasting. I didn't choose to post the very next picture where I was clumsily dealing with the extra long onion you see dangling off my spoon!

A serving station in action...

Soup is good food!

And just in case you were wondering, all bowls and spoons were biodegradable and compostable. The bowls were sugarcane-based, and the spoons were potato-based.
