SNACK ATTACK!

2009.04.14
On April 14, 15 and 16 the SIS PTA Wellness Committee organized an inter-active learning program "Snack Attack!" which engaged students in discussions about healthy and unhealthy snack choices. Each class rotated between three stations:

"Pack Your Snack"...

"Serving Size"...

and "What are you Drinking?"

Students had a chance to choose between healthy and unhealthy snacks and drinks. They scanned Nutrition Labels and identified unhealthy ingredients and discussed healthy alternatives to over processed foods and drinks that contain high fructose corn syrup, trans fats and high levels of sugar, sodium and additives.

Classes had an opportunity to talk about healthy serving sizes and participated in a quiz to identify the most appropriate serving size for some popular snacks.

They also voted on the the next best drink to water in a reusable water bottle and looked at the ingredients of sports drinks and other popular drinks.

A special thanks to Linda Simpson, Susan Fierro, Susan Miller, Rita Christansen, and Helen Brady for sharing their time and expertise over three non-stop days! I have already heard from parents that it has affected the choices some kids are making in their diets at home. Good stuff, huh?
