EARTH DAY

2009.04.22
Earth Day 2009 fell smack in the middle of our Second Annual Green Week! All week long our students have been working on many initiatives. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but no amount of photos can possibly do justice in portraying the spirit and vibrancy of this work!

Our third grade spent much of their time cleaning the vegetable gardening, preparing the beds, and planting a spring crop.

Two new beds were constructed to give us even more room.

We also built furrows to provide root vegetables a place to grow.

The fourth grade prepared our herb garden for its second year in action.

They also constructed a second bed to plant herbs. The growing of herbs is continuing to be integrated into their social studies curriculum.

The fifth graders identified two plots of land that were 20'X40' and planted two dozen trees in each plot. A fence was built around the above plot.

There is no fence around the second plot. Over the years to come we will be comparing the growth rates in both plots in order to see the effects of deer overpopulation on our natural habitat.

Some school projects include the planting of evergreens to beautify our building exterior.

We are now recycling of #5 plastics (in addition to our year round plastic recycling efforts).

We began a composting initiative that I would like to see continue year-round.

And we are finishing our year-long plastic bottle cap recycling effort. Our initial receptacle literally burst at the seams and two additional structures needed to be built to accommodate the amount of plastic we collected!

The week will end on Friday, Arbor Day, when every child will take home their own tree for planting. I'd like to thank the countless PTA parents who dedicated their time throughout this week - especially those who brave the rains early in the week! Kudos to our amazing Helen Brady, the PTA Green Week Chairperson who does the lion's share of work needed to pull off such a mammoth event!
