Living History

2009.04.24
Today and this coming Monday is "The American Revolution Living History Day" for our fourth grade.

During today's sessions, students learned about what it took to build encampments.

They learned how to pitch a tent.

There would be six people sleeping in a tent this size. Snoring as well as tossing and turning would surely be frowned upon!

Working cooperatively was a big message that we learned today.

There are many ways to learn about history. In my mind, the grandest goal is to teach historical empathy and have students able to imagine what it would be like to be alive in another era. Today surely gave a unique lens into the Revolutionary Period we are currently studying.

A big thank you is due to Mr. John Badini. He is a fourth grade teacher who has dedicated much of his own time to the Living History Workshops that are available to teachers in New York State. He has acquired the equipment we use, and spent hours organizing this amazing event.
