Trail Day

2009.09.26
This morning has perfect autumnal weather! The air is warm, the breeze is crisp, and the bright sun makes the world even more colorful.

Today is the first annual SIS Trail Day. It also coincides with National Public Lands Day. National Public Lands Day is the nation’s largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance the public lands Americans enjoy.

And here are some our volunteers (we'll have over one hundred before the morning is through). It is the 9 a.m. start time and they are ready to go.

These volunteers walk into our gorgeous woods to dedicate a little time to the upkeep of our nature trails.

Trails are raked and weeded.

Vines and other obstacles are removed.

Trash is collected.

And new limbs are placed along the edge of the trails to make sure they are clearly and safely visible to all students. It is amazing how quickly the original limbs decomposed!

A very exciting part of the day was the speed with which our rustic white and green trails also received this manicured treatment.

As we work we learn a lot! We also find a few surprises. Did you know living things can be found in the woods?

Maybe next year we should provide refreshments. Grubs have a lot of protein, but I can't imagine their too tasty without butter and garlic.

It was great to have so many families join us.

A personal highlight was the saga of the big, fallen tree that went right across the green trail. Now, I know kids would have no problem jumping over this obstacle, but some men decided this just wouldn't do...

However, the only saw we had was a bow saw. So we sawed.

And sawed.

And wacked the tree with stones out of frustration. It became downright Paleolithic!

In the end, after much cutting, twisting, and leveraging, the tree did break and was able to be removed. Chainsaw? Real men don't need no stinking chainsaws!

I would like to personally thank every volunteer who so graciously lent us their time and energy. We are fortunate enough to have a real treasure on our property, and I am so happy I had the opportunity to share it with you! ~ John Griffiths
