Behold: The Might Mississippi River

2008.04.28
This was January 9, 2008.

The Riverfront today - now 4ft over flood stage.
(Run your mouse over the square and enlarge)

Once a place to get a great hotdog, it now serves as a marker for our floods..
During the Great Flood of 1993, the water crested at 22.63 feet on July 9 This is nearly 8 feet above the 14.9 foot flood stage.
The waters rose to the top of this cafe.

The Rhythm Casino is shut down until the waters recedes.

As the Mississippi River continues to rise, the National Weather Service has lowered the forecast for the river’s crest.

At 2 p.m. today, the river was at 18.63 feet, up about two-tenths of a foot from 10 a.m.

Meanwhile, the National Weather Service expects the river to crest at 19.3 feet about midnight Tuesday and remain there until about noon Wednesday when it starts its fall.

The crest had been forecast at 19.54 feet earlier today.
