Friday fun: Christmas Lights

2009.11.06

With only only seven weeks ($1.7 trillion in sales) to go before Christmas, any sane person (I know you're out there) should be getting very worried about all those hideous lights already affixed to lamp posts, festooning public places and heralding the unbearable torture of tinned Christmas carols.

If you're not, this image should start the healthy process of anguish and despair and drunken binging that usually accompany the Season to be Jolly.

Some years ago, I was walking up my street in Athens and every house on either side had those fucking twinkly lights on. To make matters worse, each set included a small plastic sound box with said midi Christmas carols beeping and chirruping away. Never mind "decking the halls", I wanted to deck someone.

The only way to remain sane and avoid a lengthy prison sentence was to hang Santa. The lynch mob felt slightly better, but my neighbours never spoke to me again.

And here's one factoid you'll regret having in your neurones now: it is very hard to knot a hangman's noose using Xmas lighting cables. So there.

In the meantime, I hope you all have an illuminating weekend, ho, ho, ho!

dontblink So do you turn green at Christmas like the Grinch? Maybe one day your heart will grow two sizes. ha ha :)
dontblink · 2009-11-06: 06:55
davids The "Christmas" lights were switched on in Oxford Street and Regent Street this week... it's the first week in November if people hadn't noticed. When are we going to change the name to Autumn lights? Or "It's still summer and nowhere near f*cking Christmas" lights?
davids · 2009-11-06: 10:04
revenant Here's my answer to David's question: when they shift Easter to a more economically and fiscally advantageous period for merchants...
revenant · 2009-11-06: 10:40
revenant And the answer to Soubhagya's question is:
"Sex with Rudolph".

Widcat The Christmas things are going up here too, at least in the stores. I'm still trying to get into the mood for Thanksgiving.

busybee36 It so nice to find another kindred soul who dislikes christmas (and especially the commercialism it now stands for) as much as I! The thing that really gets me is those houses that are absolutely covered in lights and decorations - do the owners have nothing better to do with their time?
busybee36 · 2009-11-11: 04:57
eternity65 Well i can't agree more with you and busybee!! It all starts far to early in the year and has become way to commercialised, just like Easter, Halloween and yes, especially valentine. Everybody is spending so much money on those damned decorations and lights instead of buying their kids and wife what they really wanted ;-)) Result, everybody unhappy in the end ....... Isn't that great :-))))
