November 8, 2009 - The Mayan

Just north of Alameda on Broadway in Denver, Colorado (near the 0,0 address marks in Denver) is the Mayan Theater. I need to find out something about the history of this amazing place.

I first saw this theater when I moved back to Colorado from Oklahoma in 1994. I was attending the Colorado Institute of Art at the time, with the goal of getting a second undergrad degree in Photography. That never happened, but I did get to use some really cool large format plate cameras. I used one to take a photo of the Mayan at the time. This is NOT that photo. This photo I took today as I was passing by.

The fact that I have a device (my cell phone) in my pocket at all times that can take instant photos of this sort is amazing in itself. But, I guarantee the photo I took with the 4x5 view camera from CIA is nothing like this version. I prefer the one I took while in school.
