HOLY WEEK...

2008.03.18

Holy Week (Latin: Hebdomada Sancta or Maior Hebdomada, "Greater Week") in Christianity is the last week before Easter. It includes the religious holidays of Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday (Holy Thursday) and Good Friday, and lasts from Palm Sunday (or in the East, Lazarus Saturday) until but not including Easter Sunday, as Easter Sunday is the first day of the new season of The Great Fifty Days. It commemorates the last week of the earthly life of Jesus Christ culminating in his crucifixion on Good Friday and his resurrection on Easter Sunday.

These shots come from a reportage I did at The Non-Catholic Cemetery in Rome: the site, also widely known as the Protestant Cemetery although it contains the graves of Jews and other non-Christians, is one of the oldest burial grounds in continuous use in Europe.
"It might make one in love with death, to think that one should be buried in so sweet a place", wrote Percy Bysshe Shelley, not long before he drowned and was buried here.
In 1877, Oscar Wilde visited the Cemetery, proclaiming it "the holiest place in Rome" .

DancingDolphin Beautiful cemetery... I always visit them, so peaceful. We went to the one here on Key West the first day, but while it was interesting because all the graves are above ground, I prefer this more traditional kind. The second shot is my favorite. Very nice set.

MUMMoira Doesn't look gloomy at all with all that lovely greenery, a bit cramped though. The angel is beautiful "resting" there.

"A cemetery is a history of people - a perpetual record of
yesterday and sanctuary of peace and quiet today. A cemetery
exists because every life is worth loving and remembering - always."
