HE HAD A DREAM...

2008.04.04

40 years ago, Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee.
King was a Baptist minister, one of the few leadership roles available to black men at the time. He became a civil rights activist early in his career. He led the Montgomery Bus Boycott (1955–1956) and helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (1957), serving as its first president. His efforts led to the 1963 March on Washington, where King delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech. Here he raised public consciousness of the civil rights movement and established himself as one of the greatest orators in U.S. history. In 1964, King became the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to end segregation and racial discrimination through civil disobedience and other non-violent means.
"I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: we hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal."

He had a dream, I still have hope...

glennis Lovely post! "I have a dream that my two children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character". Too true ! but unfortunately my hope is waning......

DancingDolphin Nicely done. My father-in-law was a Methodist minister in the early days of the civil rights movement. He invited MLK to speak to his congregation and then in true Methodist minister fashion, home for dinner. I have a great shot of my (deceased) husband as a kid, sitting at a card table in the living room with MLK. It must have been something to think back on...

Primavera Bravo!

"Man is man because he is free to operate within the framework of his destiny. He is free to deliberate, to make decisions, and to
choose between alternatives. He is distinguished from animals by his freedom to do evil or to do good and to walk the high road
of beauty or tread the low road of ugly degeneracy."
(Martin Luther King- 1959)
