Disc jockey David Humphries, a.k.a. "Hump The Grinder," came up with this concept as one of his 'gimmick parties' to keep things interesting in the clubs. What began as a 4-week hair promotion, lasted several years, as more and more hair stylists took advantage of this opportunity to showcase their work. They had no other platform to show off their hair creations. Beauty schools eventually became involved, and that took on a separate division, which was named the "Hair Wars Beauty School Showdown," a grooming center for Hair Wars.

Eventually, the hair segment of the parties got so popular, the full-time focus was promoting and marketing 'Hair Entertainment.' In 1991 the performances moved from the clubs into larger venues and what was a party with a little hair became lots of hair with an after party.

In 1994 Hair Wars went on its first road trip to Los Angeles, where several of Detroit's top hair stylists performed and Southern California hair stylists, along with many others from around the country, joined the tour as it traveled to several cities. Some of the top cities other than Detroit on the tour include: Columbus (OH); Oakland; San Diego; Chicago; Raleigh; Dallas; Atlanta; New York; Las Vegas; Miami and the Caribbean.

Hair instructional seminars are also a big part of Hair Wars. Top hair educators have been teaching new techniques and creating new trends in over 25 cities since the educational tours began in 1992. Hair Wars is still known for showcasing the hottest trendsetting hair stylists in the U.S.

The forest in the reservation has many fine examples of hemlock, white oak, red oak, and shagbark hickory trees, as well as beech and sugar maples. This area is well-known for its brilliant fall colors.

The outdoor sculpture known as "squaw rock" in South Chagrin Reservation was carved by artist and blacksmith Henry Church in 1885. During his life the American Indians knew only hardship at the hands of white settlers. Henry Church was compelled to tell the story of the American Indians. He called this work "The rape of the Indians by the white man." In this giant chunk of sandstone he carved a quiver of arrows (with the four phases of the moon), a giant serpent, an eagle, a woman with a shell behind her (reminiscent of Botticelli's Venus), a dog, skeleton, and a baby in a papoose. On the river side of the rock, you can find images of tall ships, a frontiersman with an axe, a log cabin, and the first capital building in Washington D.C.

The Nature Center highlights exhibits featuring both the interesting history and the diverse wildlife of the area. A trip to the Nature Center won't be complete without a visit to the landscaped wildlife garden adjacent to the building sheltering a variety of flowering plants, shrubs and evergreens designed to attract birds and butterflies.

A walk on one of the three major trail systems that start near the Nature Center takes you through rich, deep woodlands that support a host of songbirds and the Iron Spring Wildlife Preserve that is specially managed for upland wildlife species. The Ridgetop trail traverses the crest of the valley and features excellent views of the preserve area.

She is a mother of three, lives in Detroit, and is on welfare. She decided to go to college because she was sick and tired of being sick and tired of not having anything for her or her family. She wants to complete her degree in a Bachelor's of Health Administration, and help her family become successful and self-sufficient from the "system" as she calls it. She is in her 4th week of college, and is 1 week away from completing her first course. I'm proud of her!

Powered by Photoblog.com

The holiday commemorates an initial victory of Mexican forces led by General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín over French forces in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. The date is observed in the United States and other locations around the world as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride.

A common misconception in the United States is that Cinco de Mayo is Mexico's Independence Day; Mexico's Independence Day is actually September 16 (dieciséis de septiembre in Spanish), which is the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico.

The 18-story building was designed by the same architects who designed New York’s Grand Central Station. It was rapidly completed for use and dubbed the Michigan Central Depot after Detroit's original train depot burned down in 1913. Although the building was isolated a couple of miles southwest of downtown, the city hoped it would attract business and other buildings to the area. Unfortunately, it never did.

While the area surrounding the depot didn't experience the expected boom, the depot itself remained busy and in use up to and throughout the years of World War II. According to David Kohrman at ForgottenDetroit.com, it was probably the advent of the automobile that caused the decline in passenger service to the building thereafter.

Heidelberg Project:
The Heidelberg Project, bearing the name of the street on which it exists, was started in 1986 by Tyree Guyton. He was assisted by his grandfather, Sam (Grandpa) Mackey (deceased), and his former wife, Karen Guyton. Tyree was raised on Heidelberg Street and, at the age of 12, witnessed the tragic effect of the Detroit riots - from which he claims the City of Detroit never recovered. Though once racially integrated, many neighborhoods have become segregated urban ghettos characterized by poverty, abandonment, and despair.

Armed with a paintbrush, a broom, and neighborhood children, Guyton, Karen, and Grandpa began by cleaning up vacant lots on Heidelberg and Elba Streets. From the refuse they collected, Guyton began to transform the street into a massive art environment. Vacant lots literally became “lots of art” and abandoned houses became “gigantic art sculptures.” Guyton not only transformed vacant houses and lots, he integrated the street, sidewalks, and trees into his mammoth installation and called his work, "The Heidelberg Project", after it's location on Heidelberg Street.

Powered by Photoblog.com
