El Palau Güell és un edifici dissenyat per l'arquitecte Antoni Gaudí, màxim representant del modernisme català, entre 1885 i 1900. El palau està situat al carrer Nou de la Rambla núm. 5 de Barcelona, al barri del Raval. Va ser encarregat per Eusebi Güell, un ric industrial barcelonès qui sentia una gran admiració per l'arquitecte a qui va fer de mecenes finançant algunes de les seves obres més conegudes. Aquesta obra pertany a l'etapa orientalista de Gaudí (1883-1888), període en què l'arquitecte realitza una sèrie d'obres inspirades en l'art del Pròxim i Extrem Orient (Índia, Pèrsia, Japó), així com en l'art islàmic hispànic, principalment el mudèjar i nassarita. Gaudí emprà amb gran profusió la decoració en rajola ceràmica, així com els arcs angular, cartel·les de maó vist i rematades en forma de templet o cúpula. L'edifici s'estructura en diverses plantes funcionalment diferenciades, amb una entrada de dimensions impressionants i una distribució de les estances al voltant d'una xemeneia cònica què, com a nucli central, enllaça i ventila els pisos superiors. A la teulada hi ha vint xemeneies, que lluny de ser tractades com elements molestos, Gaudí els hi conferí un caràcter decoratiu. Amb això, inicià una forma de dissenyar les xemeneies que aniria desenvolupant a les seves obres següents, fins a arribar a assolir resultats espectaculars a la Casa Milà Gaudí va comptar per a la seva construcció amb la col·laboració de l'arquitecte del seu taller Francesc Berenguer, el mestre forjador Joan Oñós, l'ebenisteria d'Antoni Oliva i Eudald Puntí, la decoració, vitralls i mobiliari de Francesc Vidal i Jevellí i la pintura d'Aleix Clapés i Puig. El palau va ser declarat Patrimoni de la Humanitat per la UNESCO el 1984. The Palau Güell (Catalan pronunciation: [pəˈɫaw ˈɣweʎ], English: Güell Palace) is a mansion in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain designed by the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí for the Catalan industrial tycoon Eusebi Güell. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Works of Antoni Gaudí". The home is centered on a main room for entertaining high society guests. Guests entered the home in horse drawn carriages through the front iron gates, which featured a parabolic arch and intricate patterns of forged iron-work resembling seaweed and in some parts a horsewhip. Animals could be taken down a ramp and kept in the livery stable in the basement where the servants resided, while the guests went up the stairs to the receiving room. The ornate walls and ceilings of the receiving room disguised small viewing windows high on the walls where the owners of the home could view their guests from the upper floor and get a 'sneak peek' before greeting them, in case they needed to adjust their attire accordingly. The main party room has a high ceiling with small holes near the top where lanterns were hung at night from the outside to give the appearance of a starlit sky. In 2004, visits by the public were completely suspended due to renovations; some of the stone used in the original construction was weak and has cracked over the years causing structural problems within the building. As of 1 February 2008, Palau Güell was partially reopened to the public, with access to limited parts of the building only. It is currently completely open with all restoration work completed in April 2011.
