The historical photographer which I chose to write about was Eve Arnold, one of the greatest female photographers ever. She was born Eve Cohenn in Philadelphia. Her interest in photography began in 1946 while working in a New York City photo-finishing plant. Over six weeks in 1948, she learned photographic skills from Harper's Bazaar art director Alexey Brodovitch at the New School for Social Research in Manhattan. Eve Arnold photographed many of the iconic figures who shaped the second half of the twentieth century, yet she was equally comfortable documenting the lives of the poor and dispossessed, “migrant workers, civil-rights protestors of apartheid in South Africa, disabled Vietnam war veterans and Mongolian herdsmen.”
Arnold's images of Marilyn Monroe on the set of The Misfits (1961) were perhaps her most memorable, but she had taken many photos of Monroe from 1951 onwards. Her previously unseen photos of Monroe were shown at an Halcyon Gallery exhibition in London during May 2005. She also photographed Queen Elizabeth II, Malcolm X, and Joan Crawford, and traveled around the world, photographing in China, Russia, South Africa and Afghanistan.
She set the standard for iconic photography and female photographers.

Contemporary- Robert Adams
The Contemporary photographer I chose to right about is Robert Adams. Robert Adams, son of Lois Hickman Adams and Ross Adams, was born on May 8, 1937 in Orange, New Jersey
Adams enrolled in the University of Colorado, Boulder in 1955, and attended it for his freshman year, but decided to transfer the next year to the University of Redlands in California where he received his B.A. in English from Redlands in 1959. He continued his graduate studies at the University of Southern California and he received his Ph.D. in Englich in 1965
In 1962 they moved back to Colorado, and Adams began teaching English at Colorado College in Colorado Springs. In 1963, Adams bought a 35mm reflex camera and began to take pictures mostly of nature and architecture. He soon read complete sets of Camera Work and Aperture at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center. He learned photographic technique from Myron Wood, a professional photographer who lived in Colorado. While finishing his dissertation, he began to photograph in 1964. In 1967, he began to teach only part-time in order to have more time to photograph. He met John Szarkowski on a trip to New York City in 1969. The museum later bought four of his prints. In 1970, he began working as a full-time Photographer.
He is a photographer who has given others who have passion for photography but are leading another career hope.

Powered by Photoblog.com

I went to visit the Chapman Cultural Arts Center because they had an exhibit which showcased two different artists, one a photographer and one a painter. Patty Wright, a photographer and Amy Holbein, a painter share the exhibit space equally with their pieces respectfully.
I found their combination delightfully tasteful yet different. Wright fills the exhibit with dark images of decay but they seem to have a trace of beauty and elegance to them. It took me a while to actually find the beauty at first though, it is something that grows on you. Holbein fills the exhibit with paintings that challenge what reality truly is. Which contrasts with the reality of Wright's pictures of the Dupre House. Holbein makes simple objects such as a window or a bowl and makes them abstract. It is an interesting form. Many of Holbein's paintings are of little churches where she painted them both realistically then abstract. It is an interesting combination.
I spent awhile in the gallery to try and understand their motifs and meanings for all the art work. Being in 2 art classes has helped me understand better.

Powered by Photoblog.com
