Reason to Design... #142:

“…TO GO WHERE NO ALPINE CAR HAS GONE BEFORE”
-
The increasing popularity of extreme winter sports has inspired Robert Heath, a Coventry University Transport & Product design student, to design an equally extreme mountain rescue vehicle. Robert says that skiers, boarders and climbers are pushing further and higher in their search for the extreme challenges, but these bold moves lead them into terrain that is often too difficult for traditional rescue vehicles to negotiate. Robert believes that his “SRV (Snow Rescue Vehicle) has been designed to go where no rescue vehicle has gone before… it’s rapid response could save lives in an environment where every second counts.”

Reason to Design... #141:

“…TO PROMOTE SOCIAL INTERACTION”

Mitchell Crawford, a Coventry University Transport Design Student in the UK, envisages the future outdoor social entertainment environments to be cyclic, solar and safe. His design aims to promote social interaction with exiting seating positions and a sculptural centre piece that offers warmth and light into the twilight hours.

Reason to Design... #140:

“…TO TAKE THE ATLANTIC CHALLENGE”

“There is a demand for luxurious high-speed water vessels, but the amount of oil resources used by the industry is exorbitant and is a problem that needs to be addressed.”

This is the opinion of Kyung Min Lee, a Coventry University Transport and Product Design Student. His solution to this problem is to design a kite-motor-hybrid catamaran that is versitile enough to travel distances as vast as the Atlantic. Kyung exhibits his work at the Re/active show in Coventry, UK.

Reason to Design... #139:

“…BECAUSE BLACK COULD BE THE NEW WORD IN LUXURY”

Jabran Syed’s ‘Black Ghost’ concept is a luxury lounge vehicle that is a conceptual solution to long distance commuting. Initially the project started out as a purely sculptural project, taking inspiration from the beautiful forms of classic 1930’s automobiles that catered for the lifestyles of the affluent. Jabran is a Transport and Product design student at Coventry university and exhibited his work at the Re/active show.

Reason to Design... #138:

“…TO MAKE A TWO WHEELED SOLID HYDROGEN DELIGHT”

Cicada, pronounced: ‘Si-key-dah’, is carbon footprint reducer. Designed to use state of the art electronic systems, allied with solid state hydrogen storage, it will dramatically reduce a rider’s carbon footprint as they go about their daily commute. The designer of this new eco-bike is Joe Stockley a Transport & Product Design student of Coventry University in the UK. This design work is on show at the Re/active show in Coventry, UK.

Reason to Design... #136:

"...SO WE CAN DRIVE ALPINE GEAR"

POC are an alpine sport brand who produce performance led products with a strong graphical identity. In this project Philip Graham Woodman, a Transport and Product Design student, explores the idea of extending the POC brand architecture by designing an off-road coupe/crossover interior so the driver’s adrenaline seeking lifestyle continues off-piste and onto the mountain roads. To Find out more about Philip’s project see the POC multimedia design magazine here. His work is currently being exhibited at the ‘Re/active’ show being held by Coventry University.

Reason to Design... #136:

"...TO HELP THAT ACTIVE LIFESTYLE"

David Arnold, a Design Transport & Product student of Coventry University, names this concept 'Attivo' - a lifestyle vehicle aimed primarily at 25-35 year old urban dwellers. It would have useful features such as sleeping capacity and an easy to clean interior for dirty equipment. The perfect vehicle for a sporadic surf trip to the coast with sandy shoes, bags and bodies.

Andrew's concept is on show in the Coventry 'Re/cognition' show in the UK until 5th June 2008..

Reason to Design... #135:

“…TO MAKE THE TOUGHEST BIKE ON THE BLOCK”

If someone mentioned JCB, you might be forgiven for conjuring up images of building sites and scaffolds in the back of your mind. However, Tom Bull from Coventry University’s Transport and Product Design course believes he can change all of that. He has created a completely new market for JCB with his new eco-powered enduro off-road bike design. Tom says: “It has been designed with the visual identity of JCB in mind to show the durable and robust nature that JCB product portray.” Tom’s concept is on show in the Coventry ‘Re/action’ show in the UK..

Reason to Design... #134:

"...TO CREATE CULTURAL CUES"

'The Shooting Brake' is the name of a concept at the 'Re/active' exhibition that aims to offer a fresh alternative to sport cars such as the Audi TT. Paven Patel, a Transport & Product Design student of Coventry University in the UK, designs a car with surface that subtly come together to reveal traditional Indian shapes and forms. He feels that "the concept will appeal to those who want a purposeful design with individuality."

The 'Re/active' exhibition is on until 5th June 2008..

Reason to Design... #133:

‘…TO SAVE THE WORLD’

“With the ever increasing rate of natural disasters occurring every year the need for improved rapid response disaster relief vehicles has become apparent.”

This statement made by Adam Schacter is the fundamental justification for the ‘Gibbs A.R.C’ - his amphibious aid delivery and rescue craft that is being exhibited at the Re/active show in Coventry UK. Adam says that it would be best use in areas affected by heavy flooding. It uses high speed amphibian technology including a retractable wheel system to plane across water, enabling it to quickly reach areas that are often unreachable by ordinary land vehicles. Once at its destination the A.R.C can deploy large container units full of anything from food, medicine and shelter, to vital equipment such as water filtration systems that convert contaminated flood water into fresh drinking water.
