One photo is the dock at one of our favorite summer spots (during winter, obviously). The other four photographs are of the Italian Hall Massacre Memorial Service. They used to always have the memorial on Christmas Eve, but stopped for many years. This is the first year that they started having the memorial service again. There was a lantern lit for every victim. My family was at the Italian Hall Massacre, but none of them were killed. Some of our relatives through marriage, however, are listed among the casualties.

Powered by Photoblog.com

Hello to Eija and Leena.

I went to Grapevine, Texas, just outside of Dallas, to visit my cousin who was visiting for a convention from North Carolina. I stayed in the same resort as her so we could visit without complications, but before I made the long drive back to Houston, I stopped in historic Grapevine and walked the main street, grabbed lunch at the best deli I've been to in a while, and snapped a few photos. Some of the sites were typical historic main street attractions, but there were a few different things as well.

Powered by Photoblog.com

We did the usual Austin things (Barton Springs) and went to the usual Austin restaurants, which are all things that I miss now that I don't live there (not enough to move back, though). This time we went to the Botanical Gardens which are across the street from Zilker Park and Barton Springs.

The gardens were a little dried up and the plants looked thirsty since we haven't had very much rain so far this summer. The gardens were still nice and you could see a nice panorama of the skyline from one of the many vantage points. Also at the gardens were an old schoolhouse and this very old Swedish cabin.

With the city encroaching on us over the past few years and with an explosion of development over this last year, I try to take every opportunity that I can to relax in a quiet environment. The property that shares a boundary with my friend's property is home to about 50-75 goats, a few alpacas, and a buffalo. Not only did I find their presence enjoyable, I marveled over the fact that all of these animals get along so well together. One of the alpacas is especially friendly. He runs up to greet you when he sees you near the fence (and hopes you might feed him a handfull of grass). Here are some photos of "Mr. Alpaca."

Powered by Photoblog.com

We checked on the family summer cottage while we were there. The cottage is closed in the winter so we wanted to make sure there weren't any problems since everyone has been away. It's odd visiting there during the winter (ok, spring) but it was nice to see the drastic change in landscape between the two seasons. The tree to the left is the same tree in both photos. The dock is also the same. You can see the ice melting away a little in the winter scene. Soon enough all of the ice will melt, giving way to another wondeful summer at the lake.

Powered by Photoblog.com
