i love night photography.

i don't know if it's the conundrum of having so little light to be perceived, with the odd and flattening contrasts that shadows and light sources produce, with the hidden thrills that are looming in the dark; or if it is only my preferred time of the day because it's when life slowly dwindles to a silent pause, to something much more enjoyable than the performance and productivity displayed in full daylight.

if the earth would be tidally locked like the moon is to our planet, doomed to show us only one of its hemispheres, if we had a glistering day side towards the sun and a cold, dark night side... i probably would want to live in the area of dawn or dusk, just catching the last glimpses of our blazing star and just dipping into the blinking glitter of the night sky's starlight - always mobile enough to add a little, distract a little of light when needed - just like i do with my camera.

there will be always unfulfilled wishes, desires, demands that never see the light of day. i feel like i'm sleepwalking on a vast ocean of darkness, with little more than a candle in my hand, finding my shaking way through it on unreliable, flickering reflections about what IS, what ISN'T - all i have for a direction, but failing already from the start. the night soothes, it eases that pain of things we need to do, need to know... and can't and won't.

the warm, dark embrace of the soul.

(dedicated to sleepless josy63)

come hither my friend and truly rejoice
let the fiddle triumph in its squireling voice
and HO-HE the drunken boy sings
play games with half naked girls rings
where clinging glasses chime crude odes of joy
and your feisty host fills his register with pay

come hither, all you useless scum
beggars, losers, braggers and bums
make haven here, where life itself
makes a splash on your darkest shelves
spend all your powers, as long as you may
and leave the bartender a generous pay

come hither, may you be shy or just dumb
open your eyes and fill up your womb
or belly if that's what you really desire
or soul... witch is what you require
it all will be over when sun breaks the day
and that's when the reaper will get all your pay.

i'll be soon flying over to my other home country and i look forward to the warmth, the difference, the oddities, the friendliness of the people, the beauty of the landscape and the continued experience of a culture that is not mine and where i don't fit in naturally.

in many ways, i feel home in the comfort of being a stranger, a visitor only. i dive into the whirlpool of their life, their reality and stay in there, slowly dissolving to become one of them, and yet like a pebble in a glass of fruit juice, will not - a reminder, in so many ways, for what i am here as well.

we live in a constant exception. taking things for granted we must, otherwise the mind would crack; but to be reminded that nothing is as it seems and all things are different all the time, everywhere, forcefully and violent - that is worth the trouble of traveling.

the cutting edge of human attempts to expand our presence into space has become worn, exhausted and ready to be stowed away in a museum.

now, money is being made with the curiosity, patriotism and nostalgic enthusiasm for a history not progressed anymore; and all we can do is stare in awe at the boldness, ingenuity and solutions of our parent's generation.
