Atlantic Beach had clear-skies this morning during twilight, seen here at sunrise proper (and better large on black), with just a few clouds low on the horizon and lots of gulls wheeling in the brisk west wind. Sweet!

The clouds were clearing to the east through twilight, and the sun finally emerged above the trailing edge about 40 minutes after sunrise proper (better large on black). Happy Thanksgiving!!

SPOD is on the NC coast for a few days... here's this morning's sunrise shot... from behind the Channel Marker on the causeway at Atlantic Beach, NC... looking over Bogue Sound as the sunr rises above Bogue Banks (and better large on black). What a great way to start the day!

More of the same clouds & drizzle in the Raleigh area this morning... which calls for another stand-in shot from my archive... this dating from July 7, 2007... subdued colors at sunrise proper on a muggy summer morning (and better large on black). A bit grainy, but still sweet!

We've got roller coaster weather in the Raleigh area... back into nothing but clouds and drizzle this morning. Here's a stand-in from the archive, dating to Oct 29, 2008... a colorful and very interesting cloud formation slicing through an otherwise clear sky just before sunrise proper (better large on black). Note the unusual bright spot above the horizon. Sweet!

The Raleigh area saw another very nice sunrise event today, featuring some neon-laced clouds at mid-twilight, in the top image (and better viewed large on black), and a golden glow at sunrise proper, above (also better LOB). Very Sweet!!

Plenty of just the right kind and position of clouds this morning in the Raleigh area, and the resulting sunrise was a beauty! Seen in the top image in early twilight (better large on black) with the neon colors and in the middle at sunrise proper (again better LOB). Whew! Above is a pano from even earlier during twilight (also better LOB). All in all, a very sweet show!

Going from completely overcast to high-pressure dominated nearly cloudless skies usually yields a plane-Jane sunrise event... but that fails to consider atmospheric elements you can't see and the effects they may have on the view. These robust crepuscular rays and cloud shadows are a case in point (better large on black) - never saw them coming, but they sure provided for anything but a p-J sunrise event! Very sweet!

The Raleigh area was under a blanket of drizzling clouds again this mornig, so here's a stand-in shot from the archive... and one of my favorites, too... from July 25, 2007 overlooking Charleston Harbor, with some terrific clous shadows playing off early morning thunder storms (a must see large on black). So unique!!
