This day I decided to visit NRP Barracuda, the only submarine still on duty with Portuguese Navy. In 2010 Portugal will receive a couple of new subs, so probably this would be the last chance to get in one of these.

The Barracuda was the 2nd sub of the Albacora class. Celebrated its 40 years in the week before this.

Getting into the can...

There's 54 crew members. This is the front rest room. In the middle, the table, on the sides the beds: 2 beds for each 3 men (2 plus the guy on duty). By the front, lots of water and other stuff and also the torpedoes.

Captain's 'cabin'. He's the only one with his own bed...

Officers rest 'room'. That can be arranged to make 2 or 3 beds....After this we went to the operacional room but, no pics were allowed there.

The kitchen...dinner was almost ready...And no, that's not much bigger than that....

Engines room. Hot, hot, hot!! And it was only not much more than 30ºC...they say that while on the move, it can get to the 60ºC....How can they work here?? While coming to Madeira, this room went to the 54ºC temperature...That's why this sub was nice to visit but nothing to stay around too long...

There was another litle rest room (15men) on the rear and finally...AIR!!!

Meanwhile in the harbour, life was on its regular pace for fishermen.

On that day, also arrived NRP Afonso Cerqueira.

Apesar de ser claustrofobica - e não gostar particularmente de submarinos - não pude deixar de dar uma vista de olhos. (Sempre são fardas, não é?) Por isso, tenho a dizer o seguinte: 1º Aqueles quartinhos miseráveis , tipo 3 em 2, parece-me uma coisa um bocado promiscua 2ºGostei muito do quartinho do senhor comandante, embora uma janelinha ali não ficasse nada mal. 3º A ASAE que não veja estas fotos senão fecham a tasca. Até cabos de madeira as facas têm. Inconcebivel! 4º Por fim, mas não menos importante: AS FOTOS ESTÃO FANTASTICAS:Parabens!

Excelent! 2months ago I've been inside an submarine in Germany... It was my first time and the craft was for 28 crew members.. Thanks for your report! The quality... hum... sorry... keep on trying! :) Excelent!
