Asas de Portugal arrival to Madeira

2008.08.19
19 Years after its last display at Madeira, the 'Asas de Portugal', Portuguese Air Force display team, arrived at Madeira for a display during Funchal's 500 Years celebrations. They arrived in formation, making a high speed pass over the runway, before breaking formation to land.

The passing and breaking was so amazing that I even forgot to shot the pics (also they were so fast that the few I shot, got real crappy...).
The sun was shining on this first passing but when they came for landing the clouds already had darkened the sky....argh...!!

The landing of no.1 the team leader: Maj.Videira.

No.2, Capt.Ribeiro, coming in on short final to runway 05.

Almost there....

The third (reserve) plane with a couple of support pilots which act like speakers and make other suport tasks.

Arrival of no.1 at the stand. It was a nice surprise to know they would stay at Madeira. Initially we thought they would stay at Porto Santo, were the Air Force has a detachment and were most military traffic stays.

Linned up at the stand with 3 registrations visible.

No.1, Maj.Videira.

No.2, Capt. Ribeiro. These pilots are all instrutors at Sqd.103, at Beja Air Base with lots of flight hours and experience on these planes. Although the display team flight suit is black, this is a special flight suit for flyings over sea.

The helmets are specially painted for the display team.

The maintenance guys were really nice and easy talking (oposite to the pilots...at least, the 2 supportive pilots...)

Engine open for the after flight maintenance.

In the middle of the engines, the deposite for the mixture that makes the smoke. You can see the tube that brings the mix to the rear of left exhaust, which makes the smoke. On the back, Jorge Abreu and Miguel Nóbrega, of Madeira Spotters.

Nice to be around these little birds.
