Porto Santo has a population of about 4300 people and only a small Medical Center, with 24H E.R. Anyway, more urgent and complicated medical cases have to be evacuated to Madeira by Air Force plane or helicopter.

During summer (specially in August), the population of the island doubles and the need for medical evacuations is even more. During my stay there, the Aviocar and Merlin made 1, 2 and sometimes 3 daily evacuations... The Air Force crews there (they're usually detached to Porto Santo for 15 days) are in 24h alert. This was the return from one of those medical evacuations.
On these missions, the plane's callsign is usually Medic36 (Medic35 for the Merlin helicopter). |
Anyway, meanwhile, live goes on peacefully and relaxing for the rest of the Summer visitors....
