To the first flight

2009.02.17
After quite a while, decided to share here a pic I took for a topic on an aviation forum, regarding aeronautical monuments.

This small statue is dedicated to the men that made the first flight between Lisbon and Madeira.
The flight was made in 1921 by Sacadura Cabral (pilot), Gago Coutinho (navigator) and Ortins de Bettencourt (co-pilot) in a Felixtowe F.3.
This was made as a test flight for the next year bigger flight: Portugal-Brasil, the first Southern Atlantic aerial crossing.
They weren't the first to atempt to fly to Madeira, the year before Sarmento Beires and Brito Paes had tryed (in a wheel plane) but didn't manage to find Madeira and had to make a sea landing. (beeing rescued by a merchant ship).

Primavera Muito bom este P&B! E ainda bem que falas no Bettencourt, porque ninguem se lembra nunca do "desgraçado" :)
