his tail is as long as his body. And look at how cutely he has his paws folded over the branch and his chin on them. :D

Because I finished my portfolio (same function as a thesis, just in a different format) last week and to celebrate the day after Thanksgiving, I went to the zoo today after driving Patrick to work.

It was, as always, awesome! It was also surprisingly crowded, which delighted me. I'm not normally a fan of crowds at the zoo, but I was very happy to see that many people out looking at awesome animals, learning new things, and generally not giving into the Black Friday whoop-and-holler.

My new animal crush is with the Red Panda because they are seriously outrageously cute. And cuddly looking. The zoo even has two cubs--though they're inside and hard to photograph well because of the lighting and the glass--which are even cuter than the adults. This is the male, father to the cubs, and he gets the outdoor enclosure where he's often harder to see but easier to photograph.

Today was the first time in recent visits where I saw the river otters--every other time they've either been inside or sleeping in an otter-pile in a log. Today they were bouncing around and being pretty cute.

I also haven't gone into the reptile house in any of my recent visits. Since my zoo visits are mostly about seeing and sketching the animals (with photography coming after sketching in priority), it *finally* occurred to me that sketching reptiles might be easier than, say, monkeys. Not that reptiles are inert--but they're not as zippy and twitchy as lion tamarins or sakis either. I actually did a really nice portrait sketch of the Grand Cayman Iguana as well as taking a nice portrait of him. :D
