art inspired by bioluminescent marine organisms (it moved and turned and the lights went on and off and the little appendages inflated and deflated, very cool stuff)

Griffons? Really?

I've been having so much fun at the Natural History Museum lately, that Patrick and I went there together today (he had the day off work).

It was AWESOME!! We looked at the fossils (I got to show him some of my favorites) and we explored the perfectly beautiful and excellent new oceans exhibit and looked at all the displays in the new Hall of Mammals. So cool!!

The big bull elephant is still in the rotunda, though they've changed the surround around him, which is kind of cool. I took a picture of Patrick while we were having lunch, then we took one of both of us with a hint of the elephant in the background.

I wanted to get a picture that gave an overview of the oceans exhibit, because the hall is just beautiful, but I didn't remember to in the end. Oops. I did get a picture of the very cool art exhibit at the back--they had an artist-in-residence at the museum who was basically there to be artistically inspired by the science being done at the museum. He did some really fascinating kinetic works inspired by bioluminescence.

Walking back to the Metro past the Archives we noticed....well, at first we thought they were eagles on the roof-corners over the entrances (I know there's a name for that, but I'm drawing a blank). From another angle we saw that they are, in fact, griffons. Huh. Really? I mean, griffons are such noted symbols of America, right?? Weird. But pretty.

Keryl Is *cornice* the word you're looking for? At any rate, that's some pretty fancy moulding up there. It's just beautiful. I also like that first shot!
