Day 214 - In Search Of Flying Mammals

2008.08.01

After a full day spent at the conference, we headed to Lady Bird Lake for a sunset cruise. Of course, this wasn't a normal cruise...since we were on the lookout for bats.

Apparently, there's a bridge in Austin (Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge) that is perfect for housing a colony of Mexican free-tailed bats during the summer. Around dusk, you can see millions of bats leaving the bridge, in order to forage for food in the night.

Aside from taking a cruise...tourists can also view this event from the bridge itself. I liked the way they were silhouetted against the sunset, so I snapped a picture on the way back under the bridge. =)
