The Faces of Kabul, Afghanistan

2009.07.21

I spent July 21 in city markets and an unofficial refugee camp located approximately 20 km west of Kabul. UNICEF doctors were on hand, as well as 400+ displaced families. I didn't feel like posting the camp photos today; and I'm instead putting up an essay on the faces of hope and dignity in Kabul.

ScottClarkson I'll just throw in my two cents on why they are soooo happy. There's no fighting and little mayhem in the city right now; they have jobs; there is a steady food supply; The police haven't harassed them today (maybe); it's not that hot for the season; and them seeing an American visitor with a camera instead of a gun makes them think that more of us will come. The people I've met in Kabul are friendly, gracious and engaging.

Vejane The people you show here and describe indeed seem friendly, gracious, and engaging. It's the feeling I got when I read The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns. Of course, that makes the war all the more painful.
