Apple River Canyon

The Apple River

I told Alan that he had to walk across the little bridge if he wanted to use the restroom...

This is all that exists now of Millville, IL though it is still shown on maps.

The town was founded in 1835, platted in 1846 and washed away completely by a flood in 1892.

Millville was located in what is today the Apple River Canyon State Park, its physical address is within the village of Apple River. The canyon is a deep gorge carved by the Apple River when its course was diverted during the Illinois glaciation 125,000–300,000 years ago. The old river channel eventually filled and became the South Fork Apple River. Millville was located at the confluence of these two rivers; the site is marked by a large rock formation and two plaques.

King of the Hill!

These little guys were trying to entertain themselves while their parents were fishing. Their first order of business, they told us, was to toss pebbles into the river. This was very helpful for the fishermen, I'm sure.

Home sweet home. For 48 hours, at least.

Abstract art on the tent wall: sun, leaves and shadows.

The view from my pillow. The weather was so nice, we opted for no rain fly.

Alan and I took a much-needed long weekend and went camping at Apple River Canyon State Park.
