At the top of the falls.

Again, the top of the falls. You cross this creek and then descend into the gorge on the other side.

View into the gorge on the descent.

Date 29 June 2011 Wednesday

Destination: Campsite to Bell Gorge and back
Distance: about 50km without gear. Left laptop at silent grove campsite with hosts for safekeeping.
Departure time: late morning. I htink about 10 to 11 and returned just on dark.
Water - not an issue. But there are two running creeks between the yards and silent grove. One is close to silent grove and then there is mine. The one closest to the yards is the better one.

The road was stony and rough, especially after silent grove. It is 13 km to silent grove from here. The camp hosts I realised I had met at lenard Gorge. They offered me a lift over a big bog hole but on the way back I found it wasn’t so bad and could ride almost all the way through it. Just muddy looking.

I took my valuables from my tent, took out the pole so the tent would lie flat on the ground and not be visible, leaving all my gear inside and with a note pinned to the outside saying I’d be back soon so please don’t disturb anything. I doubt anyone came to discover my campsite anyway. They are all in a rush to get to the gorge and people around here tend to be honest but it doesn’t hurt to be cautious anyway.

1pm: Lunch at Bell Gorge
Hummus with peanut butter
Damper
Leftover chickpea stew from lastnight.

The hummus was a bit dryish but still good. I would say that the peanut butter is not as good as tahini in this recipe but better than nothing.

At the gorge, it was a short walk from the carpark. I left my bike hidden in the grass behind a rock and out of sight. I left my shoes and shirt there too. Again, It was a good idea though I doubt anyone would have stolen it even if I had parked it in full view.

About 15 minutes from the carpark to the top of the falls which had some nice shallow pools where the less adventurous hung about. Then another well marked and short but steep walk down to the deep pools at the bottom. The gorge and falls were lovely. I was glad there were people about and not as many as I had been given to believe. I guess its because I’m on my own that I dont mind others being there, whereas if you were part of a couple you’d prefer the place to yourself. In waterholes Im a wuss and I always find it easier to swim if others are doing it too! Sad to say.

I chatted to some swiss and german tourists and gave them some camping spot tips I had found. I don’t know really what time I left the gorge but getting back to silent gorge it was just starting to turn on sunset and then it was almost dark by the time I got back to my tentsite. IT is 13km from here to SG and another 11 to the gorge. It was pretty slow going mostly. Not much traffic on the road tonight.

The ranger was sitting with the camp hosts when I got there. He looked sour but no one asked me where I was camping tonight. I don’t know if they know but it was good they didn’t ask as I wasn’t tempted to lie.

7pm: Dinner at at my campsite
Chicken noodle soup
Porridege w dried fruit and stewed green apple and 1 cup milk

I ate such a lot at lunch that I didn’t feel hungry at all tonight but I decided to have the porridge anyway. I have been thinking about porridge for days. It was good with the stewed apple and sultanas and 3 prunes though I didn’t notice the prunes.

Back here, I rushed down to the creek to fill up my water bag, picked up a little fire starter stuff on the way. Luckily I had some logs and a few bigger sticks left for my fire tonight as it would have been hard collecting in the dark. I guess I got going too late this morning. OH well, its all worked out well.

The battery for my laptop is nearly dead and I should pack up before the fire goes down too low. I don’t know where I am going tomorrow exactly I hope its to immitji.
