I still haven't dug out my diary.

I've only taken 3 pictures today. I am showing you almost all the snaps i take and leaving out only those that are hopelessly awful and especially if they are hopelessly awful of me - not that i do self-portraits every day. But what i am getting as is, i'm not taking as many pics anymore. It seems to be the new trend which suggests i am getting weary. I know that the photo opportunities are no any less. Its all still lovely in its typical outback kimberley way but i can't summon the energy to dig out my heavy camera as often any more. There will no doubt be a few exceptions along the way. But anyway don't you hate it when you look through your pics and wish you'd taken more. It always happens to me but i do get tired of it after an intensive burst.

Anyway all that i can remember off the top of my head today is first of all the road from the turnoff to the gorge was muddy and marred by braided roads where previous drivers had made a bog of the road when the country was still wet from the wet seasons rains. So now i'm riding all around the place not knowing if i'm on the right road.

Finally i see signs and indicators that i'm near the gorge but this turns out to be a false alarm. I pull up at a car parked by the side of what i take to be the gorge but is only a gully. There's a winebago type camper nearby and all day it seems people stop and ask these people where the gorge is. And they are getting sick of it. However, i'm made welcome. As I approach, an american voice asks me if i'm mad or just crazy for doing what i'm doing. his is a woman who's married and aussie and has lived here for some time. She offers me a salada biscuit with corned beef and pickles and i think fresh tomato. Its delicious. I also get a chilled glass of red cordial to go with it. I can't resist asking ask for a second drink. It was so good and i'm thirsty.

I learn that the gorge is still some way on but just to keep following the road til i get to the end of it.

I do that, negotiating foot deep wheel ruts, until i get to a creek crossing where more a couple with a baby are having a picnic lunch. I think that's the end of the road but its also not the end. I cross the creek and continue another kilometre over rock and rough track. Then the road ends abruptly at a large rocky outcrop that goes up. Nope there's no bike trail up over that, just a walking trail marked by cairns. No one else is here.

I leave my bike and head up the rocks. I get to the top of the gorge. I can't see anyway down so after some time, i return to my bike.

Alas someone has parked their landrover where i left my bike which means I have to find another spot to camp. I move closer to what is the river and pitch my tent in some sand. A couple emerge from the thick scrub on the edge of river. These two were here for a party. I got to listen to Neil Diamond, Neil Young and Mick jagger CDs about 3 or 4 times each until finally at about 9.30 when mick jaggers starts up YET AGAIN, i have to say something because i know i could not possibly go to sleep with that going on and i'm really sick of listening to all of it. In the meantime they had been over to my place to share a rum and coke with me by my fire. They were drunk but ok. Except for the music. (although i do like neil young).

I had a very quicky dip in the gorge before dinner but being on my own with the dark waters, i was too nervous to actually enjoy it much, even though i'd been told there weren't any crocs here.

I've just noticed that although i find the way to gorge properly the next day, i don't take a single picture. How sad, it was lovely too.

JenPat No wonder you weren't taking many photos. That sort of road is bad enough in a car, let alone on a bike. You must have been shattered by the end of the day.

lisamnz yeah, doesn't sound like fun on a loaded-up bike. Do you have mountain bike wheels or narrow ones?
