Nakhoda Manis

Nakhoda Manis

Nakhoda Manis is a story of a boy from a water village in Brunei who went off to sea to see the world but left his mother behind. The mother prayed and prayed everyday for his safety losing money everyday because she spent it as offerings. Meanwhile, the boy ended up marrying a princess of Malaysia. One day he came back to visit Brunei and was too ashamed of admitting that a poor woman who came to see him was his mother in front of his new wife. His mother then prayed to God and the boy was turned into stone along with his ship and crew.

I love this shot because it really tells the story of Nakhoda Manis. Other than showing how the massive land (or rock?) actually looking like a ship, it shows off all elements that make up this planet - the sky, the earth, water and men (portrayed by the building and that red thing - whatever that is). It also shows how time has passed since the time of Nakhoda Manis.

Besides those, since the story of Nakhoda Manis is about a kampong ayer kid marrying a princess, having the palace in the background and the tiny boat (yes, there is a boat) really portrays the story of Nakhoda Manis. Thus is why I dubbed this photo simply Nakhoda Manis.
