The shugakuin is composed of three villas situated at different hights. In the lower villa there is the Jugetsu-kan; the middle one contains Rakushi-ken and Kyaku-den while in the upper villa there is a garden with pathways laid out in a circuit for strolling and is centered around Yokuryuchi ( a large pond created by damming a mountain stream).
