Konchi - in Temple was founded at is present location when Ishin Suden, political director to Tokugawa Ieyasu, moved a temple here that was established at Kitayama between 1394 and 1428. Tsurukame Garden, famous as a prominent dry landscape garden from the beginning of the Edo Period, is designated by the national government as a special place of scenic beauty. The abbot's chamber was moved here from Fushimi Castle. The sliding doors in the abbot's chamber are adorned with famous paintings by Kano Tanyu and other great artists. The Toshogu Shrine is the only example of Gongen-style architecture in Kyoto.

Sanmon of nanzen-ji symbolized the three roads to Buddhist liberation and is well known as one of the three biggest gates in japan. the original one was built in 1296, while the one that is standing up right now was constructed in 1628 and has a height of approximately 22 meters. the gate is in a true Zen style with a gabled
roof of baked clay tiles and with 5 pillars and 3 entrances. this gate is also famous for a kabuki scene featuring Ishikawa Goemon, a kind of Japanese Robin Hood.
