Freedom Doesn't come from the East

2007.06.30
The heights of the Citadel

This statue was supposed to simbolize the freedom that the Soviet troops brought in the Hungarian capital of Budapest in 1956. In fact, they were sent to oppress an anti-communist revolution going on and raging guerilla fights lasted for more than a week with revolutionaries hoping that the Westerners/Americans will intervine and free them from the communist curse.
However, nothing happen. Many people died. Communism remained in Hungary and this statue was put in place, facing East towards where the "liberators" came. A majestic but sad monument.
