West Side Market

This was the first guy I asked if I could photograph him...He said "Hold on..." and emerged from behind the counter like this:)
pixel
I love the photo of his daughter and granddaughter taped to the cabinet behind him:)

The class was about composition, and this enthusiastic gentleman made a nice triangle with his pose:) This is one of my favorite shots of the day.
pixel
Some of the people I was most afraid to talk to or ask to photograph were the most into it...you never can tell.
pixel
pixel
Some people I talked to posed/smiled, others said ok and continued doing what they were doing, which was totally fine by me.
pixel
I realized walking around observing and talking to everyone that a large portion of the store fronts were all families working together.

This guy asked "What for?" when I asked him for a picture. I told him I was in a photography class and I was trying to capture the wonderful and interesting people of the West Side Market...he said "Alright" and this was the picture I immediately took. I think he was reluctant but he did smile afterward.

I remember coming here with my mom on Saturdays as a child. I used to look up and stare at this bulls heads with fear and wonder. Though a little dusty, he's still up there looking out over the crowd.

My friend Kevin (Duds98) and I went to the West Side Market for a 3 hour photography class that our wives got us for a Christmas present. There were 13 people taking the class with different levels of experience and knowledge. Jeff Bishop from Digital Photo Academy was the instructor, he was very personable and did a good job of working with everyone on multiple subjects.
We had a great time and it was a great learning experience for me. It was the first time that I asked a complete stranger if I could photograph them. Out of approximately 13 or so times, I was denied or told no only twice, and they were nice in the way they said it. I approached each person with my name, told them what I was doing and asked nicely if I could photograph them. The instructor had a good point about observing people and see if they seem like nice people. I watched them and if they smiled I would ask, if they looked pissed and not happy to be there I would move on to another person. I did get a couple of candid shots, they were so busy I don't think they even noticed I was there:)
Shooting inside the market posed another challenge, low light...I shot everyone of these at f2.8 and 1600 ISO. I can see how much this lens makes a difference and how a full frame camera could come in handy in these situations:)
All in all it was a great experience and a confidence boost that I can get out there and do some more portraits and shoot people in general.

The following was taken from the West Side Market's website
West Side Market
With its origins dating back to 1840 the West Side Market is Cleveland's oldest publicly owned market. Beginning as an open air marketplace on a tract of land donated by two Ohio City landowners, Josiah Barber and Richard Lord, at the corner of West 25th (Pearl) and Lorain it has undergone much growth and many improvements to arrive at its current form. The centerpiece of the market, the yellow brick markethouse with an interior concourse, was designed by the architects Benjamin Hubbel and W. Dominick Benes who also designed other famous buildings in Cleveland, such the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Wade Memorial Chapel in Lakeview Cemetery. The markethouse was dedicated in 1912 and with its 137 foot clock tower has stood as a Cleveland landmark for nearly a century. The last major renovation of the West Side Market took place in 2004 when the arcade portion of the market was enclosed and heated and major interior and architectural renovations were completed in the main building.

Today the market is home to over 100 vendors of great ethnic diversity. You can find not only fine meats and fresh vegetables, but also fresh seafood, baked goods, dairy and cheese products, and even fresh flowers. There are also booths that sell ready-to-eat foods, herbs, candy and nuts. Tourists from all over the world tour the market every year drawn by television programs produced by the Travel Channel and Food Network featuring segments on the West Side Market. Last year it is estimated that over a million people visited the market. Whether as a day-tour destination or a weekly shopping experience, the West Side Market continues to be an interesting and historical Cleveland tradition.

liveandletlive Fantastic series!! I wish I had the balls to ask people if I can photograph them. I have only ever asked twice and they both said yes, but I felt so awkward.... like they'd be thinking I was some kind of weird stalker or something.

McMommy Fantastic... I just had a moment of terror... what if I have to do this, as part of the mentorship program??? Of all of portraits I love #3 the most, although I don't know why. Food always works for me, especially rows and rows of the same things... great set Bryan.
