These three are people whom locals call "Khan". Hailing from Kashmir, they have been around in Shimla for generations, carrying huge loads to different corners of the town on their backs.
Those bands or straps that you see slung across their shoulders are for strapping the load on. The load being anything from a sewing machine to a fridge, a cupboard or a double-bed!

Are they called "Khan" because they're from Kashmir (and I'm assuming Muslim) ?? or is it their real name?

Jen, you said it for me. One is filled with compassion for these men, and yet, they don't have an ounce of self-pity! Susan, you're too kind! Liz, wow! You're really intelligent. Yes, "Khan" is a sort of cognomen! In a state that has a Muslim population of less than 1%, every Muslim was a "Khan".

pandka, When are you touring? Nice idea that these labourers have. Each place has its own contraption. Creative and effective that lessens the strain.
