the cottage

2007.11.20

Standing like silent sentinels, these broken pillars guard over the ashes of the “Old South”. They were part of the “Cottage Plantation”, just a few miles below Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The house was built in 1825 and burned in 1960. Yankee soldiers used it as a hospital during the War Between the States. I suppose there are many unmarked graves in the area. When the soldiers were here, a yellow fever epidemic broke out and it is said that hundreds died. There are many ghosts here.

In 1957, the motion picture “Band of Angels” starring Clark Gable, Yvonne DeCarlo and Sidney Poitier was filmed here.

These pillars were built by the hands of slaves.

photopoet So much unresolved history left in this land and these pillars. Thanks for putting them within their historical setting. I like the depth inherent in the composition.

sunshineand a bit like chimney stacks or grave stones. but, with a closer look i can see that they were pillars. man is so stupid to think that they need pillars made to be impressive. i like them the way they are, they are much more impressive this way, it tells the true story of man on earth. things change and continue to change. how do we want to be a part of it. do we want to contribute to having things that force people to work in conditions that are less than ours. or do we want to contribute to something better.
