A Paddle Begins.
The tool is called a spokeshave and is used to take off the edges and begin to round the shaft (handle).

McMommy the canoe museum? Such a cool project - you should try some macros of the wood curls, or the tool, or both - :)

stabeez Not the canoe museum, my own workspace. Today is such a windy, dark day with 70 km winds that I wanted to stay away from the forest and ended up with a challeng, looking for just the right photo. I only needed to look in front of myself. Thanks for the suggestions. If the weather doesn't change I may use them soon, as well as some other atique tools which belonged to my Grandfather.

stabeez The board behind is over a hundred years old from a mill my grandfather had lumber milled at. It is solid and just over 65 cm wide. The paddle is charry for the shaft and I can't identify the blade, maybe cedar.
