Herons Nesting

These birds are about a metre (3 ft) or more tall and nest high in the treetops.

The nests are over a metre across.

This is a chick in the nest. I estimate that it is about 30cm (1 ft) tall.

A friend and I kayaked to the Heronry today to see the Heron nests. I counted 4 nests where there were 23 last year. The high winter and spring winds have destroyed the rest. I was lucky enough to photograph a chick on one nest. We sat very still for close to 2 hours to let the birds become accustomed to us and forget we were in the area. Talk about cramped muscles. It was very difficult choosing 5 shots to post from about 125 taken.
